Interconnectedness of the Goals: Goal 1 & Goal 2

One of the most exciting aspects of the Global Goals is their interconnectedness. Previously, the multiple areas of development have been treated rather separately within their own categories. Now, however, we have a way to explore how social, environmental and economic development are all related to one another. This year, we are exploring how each goal and their associated targets need to see the achievement of each other in order to be fulfilled as a whole.

Goal 1: No Poverty and Goal 2: Zero Hunger

Goal 1 aims to end poverty, and Goal 2 aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.

With one in six Australians experiencing food insecurity each year, we have a big task ahead of us to ensure we achieve Goal 2. One of the main causes of food insecurity is lack of access to financial resources. When living in poverty, skipping a meal is easier than not paying rent or bills.

When it comes to nutrition, those who have the least disposable income are at risk of not being able to purchase the healthiest foods or the foods their body needs to ensure they are leading a healthy lifestyle.

By ensuring we have appropriate social protection systems and measures for all Australians around the country, we can make significant inroads to decreasing the number of people who gave experienced food insecurity or have fallen victim to poor nutrition due to lack of finances.

We also must ensure we develop resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reduce their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events. This is incredibly important for our farmers given the effect climate change has on them. Sustainable agricultural practices may incur a large cost at the outset to implement. If farmers are financially suffering from battling an challenge such as drought, they will be less likely to have the finances to take-up these practices. Doubling the income of small-scale farmers, the achievement of Target 2.3, will help lift many of these small-scale farmers out of poverty.
