Interconnectedness of the Goals: Goal 2 & Goal 3

Updated: Nov 4, 2018

One of the most exciting aspects of the Global Goals is their interconnectedness. Previously, the multiple areas of development have been treated rather separately within their own categories. Now, however, we have a way to explore how social, environmental and economic development are all related to one another. This year, we are exploring how each goal and their associated targets need to see the achievement of each other in order to be fulfilled as a whole.

Goal 2: Zero Hunger and Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being

Goal 2 aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture, and Goal 3 aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

Last week, we looked at our theme for this year, which is #HealthyNotHungry. This theme focuses specifically on Goal 2 and Goal 3 and how they relate to the other goals.

The most obvious connection between these two goals is the impact nutrition has on our health and well-being. Target 3.4 requires that by 2030, we reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment. Such non-communicable diseases include cardiovascular diseases, which is the leading cause of premature death in Australia for those over the age of 45. This can often be prevented through good nutritional practices. To find out more about nutrition in Australia and recommendations, check out our article: Time to Get off the Sofa to Achieve Goal 3!

Keep your eyes out for our blog next week on Physical Health for the Global Goals, which will be the first in our five part series on living a healthy lifestyle for the Global Goals.
